ITYS is organizing a number of screenings in an intimate setting to stay close to its aim of stimulating personal dialogue and reflection. The choice of documentaries relates to the overall concerns of ITYS, and to the concept of its first group show, taking place from April to June 2008.
This show entitled ‘Selective Knowledge’ refers to the process that artists use to shift through vast amounts of data and images to create personal narratives and gain insight into larger systems at work. It considers the recent past and the immediate future. It wonders about the ways knowledge can be grasped and contained.
Edward Said represents the ‘other voice’, the intellectual voice. As a spokesperson for the Palestinian cause and the Middle Eastern question, he mediates a volatile situation that has often been one-sidedly portrayed in the media. His is a voice of moderation, and of diplomacy.
Jayce Saloum penetrates into areas that are equally politically, socially and economically complex and tries to unearth the real story, the situation on the ground, by approaching the people that are confronted daily with the consequences.
Alain Resnais has made a number of early examples of strong and moving documentary films on the horrific legacy of the Second World War that still haunt us today. He is concerned with the importance of keeping memory alive as a source of inspiration, of knowledge, and of caution.
All screenings are organized by ITYS in collaboration with Bios.
